Health Advisory on Social Media Use in Adolescence

May 9, 2023 · American Psychological Association · Read the original ↗

The APA's first health advisory on adolescent social media: teach digital literacy before use, monitor without surveillance theater, limit use that displaces sleep and movement, and hold platforms responsible for design. Two weeks before the Surgeon General's advisory, the psychologists moved first.

The Look Up read
Two national health authorities, same month, same direction. The professional-consensus wave is documented fact now — the question is who helps families act on it.
The Look Up View: AGREE
The Look Up view
Measured, practical guidance from the psychologists: literacy before use, protect sleep and movement, hold platforms responsible — advice a family can actually run.

☀ Use it — Borrow the APA's frame for parent talks: treat social media like driving — training first, keys later, and never at the cost of sleep.
